Launched in 1998, Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group (NEREG) is a multi-site practice in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut that offers unique services and comprehensive care to children and adults with epilepsy. NEREG provides state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures, 24/7 patient service, highly skilled and experienced practitioners, and exceptional specialty programs designed to cover a broad range of health care needs in each epilepsy patient. NEREG consists of nine board-certified epilepsy specialists with fellowship training in adult and childhood epilepsy, as well as many other highly skilled health care providers including pediatric/adult neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, epilepsy nurse practitioners, a specially trained nutritionist and epilepsy advocates.

SUDEP stands for Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.

SUDEP is believed to be the cause of approximately 10% of seizure related deaths. Unfortunately, due to the unpredictable nature of SUDEP it remains an understudied phenomena. Although all patients with Epilepsy are at some risk for SUDEP, research suggests several populations of patients who are at increased risk. Dr. Danielle McBrian, pediatric epileptologist, will talk to us about the topic.

What can be done to prevent SUDEP? More recently, a growing number of electronic and mechanical devices are being marketed as an added safeguard for patients with seizures and Epilepsy. In theory they could lower the chance of SUDEP by reducing the response time in which medical care is administered. Over the next few issues, we will discuss several available devices in no particular order. We do not endorse any of these and are solely discussing them for informative purposes. We organized and participated in a lot of Epilepsy Walks, educational conferences for patients, booths, and even sponsored a baseball game at Dutchess Stadium to promote epilepsy awareness.

New memory treatment program for persons with epilepsy.

Memory deficits are the most frequently-measured cognitive impairments in epilepsy patients (1). The prevalence of memory problems in patients with refractory epilepsy has been estimated to be as high as 20 to 50% (2). In fact, more than 50% of the patients who are referred for neuropsychological assessment report memory difficulties in daily life (2).

In order to address this very troubling complaint, earlier this year, the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group began offering its patients a six-week group program that focuses on learning about memory processes and providing training in use of compensatory strategies for improvement of memory functions in everyday life.
