Epilepsy Information

Delivery

Seizures seldom occur during delivery, and most women with epilepsy are able to deliver babies without complications. Just prepare:

• Bring your birth plan.
• Bring your antiseizure medications.
• Take your antiseizure medications before and throughout labor.
• Inform all health care providers about your type of epilepsy.

Issues after delivery are usually resolved quickly.

The baby may be sedated after delivery due to antiseizure medication. (The medication most commonly associated with these symptoms is Phenobarbital.)  After the medication wears off, he or she may develop withdrawal symptoms. This seldom presents a health risk for the baby.
