Epilepsy Book Club
September 5, 2025
As part of our Wellness Program, NEREG and MAESC hosts an on-line epilepsy and seizure-themed Book Club every 4 months! Everyone in the group reads the book on their own, then “meets” online to talk about it: impressions, opinions, critiques. Books are selected based on their relevance to epilepsy, such as books that have a fictional or non-fictional character with epilepsy or that is written by a person living with epilepsy. The group will vote on the upcoming books to read.
The book that has been selected for September is Mighty Mike Bounces Back: A boy's life with epilepsy by Mike Simmel. Special treat: the author, Mighty Mike, will be joining the book club on the day we meet!
This is a synopsis about the book: Mighty Mike didn’t know how mighty he was…until the day his dad brought home a basketball.
Mike has epilepsy and sometimes it’s hard to feel like a “real” kid. He is scared of letting other people know about his disease—or even worse, being seen having a seizure! He is often worried and afraid of what other people will think. Soon Mike starts playing basketball at his school, and he learns to overcome his worries and to be courageous in the face of obstacles including his epilepsy. Written by a real-life basketball star with epilepsy, Mighty Mike Bounces Back is a fun, empowering story written to help kids learn to live comfortably with their epilepsy and to take control of their life.
Included is an extensive, kid-friendly resource section with information on handling seizures, feeling different, and living with worry that may come with epilepsy.
