MRS (MAGNETIC RESONANCE SPECTROSCOPY)

MR spectroscopy is a way to study some unique markers in the brain: N Acetyl Aspartate (NAA), Creatine, and Choline. NAA is a neuronal marker, typically thought to show the health of the brain cells. Creatine and Choline are glial markers, thought to show the brain’s response to injury or scarring (gliosis). Reduced levels of NAA and increased levels of Creatine and Choline have been observed in areas of the brain associated with onset of seizure activity. This procedure may be helpful to define the area of seizure onset. The utility of this technique is still not proven, although it could potentially add value to the evaluation. However, at present it is not a mandatory component of the clinical standard of care.
